Villa swoop for Solano

Members

Aston Villa FC have completed the €2.2m signing of Newcastle United FC midfield player Nolberto Solano.

Two and a half years
The Peruvian international has signed a two-and-a-half year deal and will be unveiled to the press tomorrow lunchtime. Solano, 29, agreed personal terms and passed a medical today.

Right flank
Solano, who operates on the right flank, joined Newcastle in 1998 from Argentinian side CA Boca Juniors for €3.7m. He had started Newcastle's last eight matches but was substituted in the last six of them. "We are sorry to lose Nobby but we do have other players who can play in his position. The loss of Nobby won't affect the side," said Newcastle manager Sir Bobby Robson.

Timely arrival
His arrival could not have come sooner for Villa manager David O'Leary, who will lose Gavin McCann to a five-game ban shortly and has another midfield player, Lee Hendrie, facing up to a month out with a calf problem.
