African Cup of Nations holders Cameroon were pegged back by a 1-1 draw against Algeria on Sunday.

African Cup of Nations holders Cameroon were held to a surprise 1-1 draw by Algeria in their opening Group C game on Sunday.

Geremi artistry
Former Parma AC striker Patrick Mboma headed Cameroon into the lead from Chelsea FC midfield player Geremi's cross shortly before half-time but Algeria, who have not progressed beyond the quarter-finals since winning the tournament in 1990, equalised through substitute Brahim Zufour after the break.

Super substitute
Algeria's unlikely share of the spoils means Egypt sit top of the pool following their 2-1 win against competition debutants Zimbabwe earlier in the day. Peter Ndlovu's 46th-minute goal put Zimbabwe into the lead but Tamer Abdelhmid scrambled a quick leveller and substitute Mohamed Barakat came off the bench to score the winning goal.

Feindouno finish
FC Girondins de Bordeaux midfield player Pascal Feindouno completed a thrilling comeback for Guinea against DR Congo to move his side level with host nation Tunisia at the top of Group A. Alain Masudi had given the Simbas a 35th-minute lead only for Aboubacar Titi Camara to level midway through the second half and Ligue 1 player Feindouno to seal Guinea's 2-1 win.
