More success for Kanouté

Tottenham Hotspur FC's Frédéric Kanouté scored again as Mali reached the African Cup of Nations quarter-finals.

Tottenham Hotspur FC striker Frédéric Kanouté scored his third goal of the African Cup of Nations as Mali became the second side to confirm their place in the quarter-finals with a 3-1 win against Burkina Faso.

Composed Kanouté
Kanouté opened the scoring in the 34th minute, capitalising on a through-ball from Malian captain Mahamadou Diarra. The Olympique Lyonnais midfield player scored himself three minutes later, heading in from a corner.

Second-half surge
Burkina Faso fought back strongly after half-time, and pulled a goal back through substitute Dieudonne Minoungou. They pressed forward in search of an equaliser but EA Guingamp forward Moumouni Dagano missed two good chances and SC Freiburg forward Soumaila Coulibaly wrapped up Mali's win 12 minutes from time, converting Kanouté's pass.

Niang delight
RC Strasbourg striker Mamadou Niang scored twice as Senegal moved within touching distance of joining Mali and hosts Tunisia in the last eight with a comfortable 3-0 victory against Kenya.

Early lead
The 2002 FIFA World Cup quarter-finalists, who drew their opening Group B game with Burkina Faso 0-0, took the lead after just four minutes. Niang – who had already failed to convert a free header – collected El Hadji Diouf's defence-splitting pass, rounded Kenya goalkeeper Francis Onyiso and rolled the ball into the net.

Diop delight
RC Lens midfield player Pape Bouba Diop doubled Senegal's lead 15 minutes later, scoring through a crowded penalty area after Henri Camara’s effort from Diouf's corner had been cleared off the line.

Decisive third
Niang wrapped up the points a minute past the half-hour, playing a one-two with Wolverhampton Wanderers FC striker Camara and shooting past Onyiso for his second and Senegal's third. Liverpool FC forward Diouf could have added a fourth early in the second half, although Dennis Oliech, Mike Okoth and Robert Mambo all had chances to score for Kenya.

Final fixtures
On Monday, Senegal meet Mali in Tunis to decide who finishes top of the section, while Burkina Faso play Kenya. The second game in Group D takes place on Saturday, with Nigeria facing South Africa in Monastir and Morocco meeting Benin.
