Under the guidance of the 42-year-old coach, Bremen went into the winter break with a four-point advantage over closest challengers FC Bayern München. "I am happy to continue my work with Bremen," said Schaaf, who replaced Felix Magath as Bremen coach in May 1999.
'No surprise'
Bremen sports director Klaus Allofs confirmed the decision at the club's Turkish training camp, saying: "This is no surprise for me but it may serve to make the upcoming negotiations with players who could leave in summer easier." Striker Ailton and defender Mladen Krstajic will leave for FC Schalke 04 in the summer and the likes of Ivan Klasnic and Krisztian Lisztes are coveted by other clubs.
