Article body
An extra-time header from Juan Pablo Sorín gave Paris Saint-Germain FC a 2-1 win at Olympique de Marseille and a place in the Coupe de France third round early this evening.
Close-range header
The Argentinian defender scored the decisive goal in the 112th minute, heading in from close range from substitute Reinaldo's cross.
Fervent fans
It was a fierce atmosphere at Marseille's Stade Vélodrome for the game between the traditional rivals but, despite the fervent support, it was the visitors who struck first. Portuguese striker Pauleta darted between Marseille central defenders Philippe Christanval and Daniel Van Buyten, controlled a long pass and shot past Fabien Barthez in the ninth minute.
PSG on top
Although the home side drew level in the 34th minute as Didier Drogba finished off a swift counterattack, it was PSG who created the better chances. Pauleta missed a golden chance five minutes into the second half, before Barthez kept out a Sorin effort, but the visitors were not to be denied.
Big names progress
Earlier, holders AJ Auxerre and Ligue 1 champions Olympique Lyonnais both progressed with comfortable victories. Auxerre ran out 2-0 winners against another top-flight side, Montpellier Hérault SC, with Bonaventure Kalou opening the scoring after 12 minutes and Djibril Cissé effectively making the game safe ten minutes later, heading in an Olivier Kapo cross.
Resounding win
Lyon were 5-0 winners against third-division neighbours FC Bourg-Péronnas in a match that was switched to the Stade Gerland. Sideny Govou scored twice, with Juninho Pernambucano, Florent Malouda and a Grégory Lopez own goal completing the scoring. RC Lens, who have lost six players to the African Cup of Nations, were defeated 2-1 at third division Dijon Football Côte d'Or, for whom François Masson and Charles Diers scored the crucial goals.
Bordeaux blow
There was another shock on Friday, as amateur club Aviron Bayonnais caused a huge upset by knocking out Ligue 1 side FC Girondins de Bordeaux out of the competition. Having eliminated another top-flight club, EA Guingamp, in the first round, Bayonne secured another shock in driving rain. Frédéric Bernaleau's 20-metre free-kick two minutes from the end of extra time left Bordeaux goalkeeper Ulrich Ramé stranded and sent the 10,000 spectators wild with delight.
Away games
The four remaining ties are played on Sunday, with Toulouse FC playing another Ligue 1 club, OGC Nice. The other three first division sides all visit lower-league opposition, with leaders AS Monaco FC away at Valenciennes FC, Stade Rennais FC travelling to Croix Savoie and FC Nantes Atlantique playing at Fontenay LCVF.
