Gurbanov glad to be back

Members

Azerbaijan striker Gurban Gurbanov has returned to his homeland to sign for league leaders FK Neftchi Baku.

Title ambition
The 31-year-old, the country's reigning Player of the Year, has agreed an 18-month contract with the Baku-based club. "I have played abroad for a long time, and now I am keen to return home to help Neftchi win the title," Gurbanov said.

International glory
Gurbanov struggled to make an impact with Russian first division side FC Volgar-Gazprom Astrakhan, but his three goals for Azerbaijan in 2003 were enough to earn the nation's acclaim. All came against Serbia and Montenegro, with the Azeris drawing 2-2 away and then winning 2-1 in Baku. In all, Gurbanov has scored eleven times for his country.
