Maccabi Netanya FC have appointed Rueven Atar as coach following the resignation of Eli Cohen.

Maccabi Netanya FC have appointed Rueven Atar, considered one of the most talented players ever to grace Israeli football, as coach after accepting the resignation of Eli Cohen.

Atar belief
Former Netanya legend Atar, 35, began the season as Landau’s assistant but stepped down in December. "I do not doubt our ability to avoid relegation,” he said. "I believe in the players and as someone who played alongside them in the last campaign I know we will kick off our battle for survival well next week against Maccabi Haifa [FC]."

Cohen resignation
Cohen took over from Gil Landau just a month ago but has been unable to inspire a reversal in fortune and opted to call it a day following a 2-0 defeat at the hands of bottom club Maccabi Nazareth FC which left them only a position in front of their fellow strugglers. He collected one victory and four defeats in his five matches in charge.

Wales debut
Atar, meanwhile, played professionally for 17 seasons and earned 32 caps for Israel. He made his debut in a friendly international against Wales in 1989 which ended in a 3-3 draw.
