Ajax inspired by Mitea magic

Members

AFC Ajax edged out title rivals PSV Eindhoven to go three points clear at the top of the Eredivisie table.

Inspired comeback
Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink gave the visitors the lead in the 42nd minute, heading a Mark van Bommel free-kick beyond the grasp of goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenberg and into the far corner. However, the home side staged an inspired comeback after the break, with Dutch international Wesley Sneijder securing a crucial equaliser in the 51st minute when he beat shot-stopper Ronald Waterreus.

Mitea winner
Ten minutes later, Mitea slipped his marker to find space in the box before calmly slotting in a close-range winner after Waterreus had spilled the ball. Mateja Kezman spurned a series of good chances as the away side battled to equalise but found no way past a resolute Ajax defence. The league leaders now have 49 points from 19 games, while second-placed PSV are on 46 but have played an extra match.

Impressive form
Feyenoord, in third, are eight points further adrift following a goalless draw at SBV Vitesse while AZ Alkmaar, in fourth, showed impressive form on Saturday to cruise to a 3-0 win against FC Volendam. Barry van Galen made sure his side hit the ground running, opening the scoring in the fifth minute, Stijn Huysegems doubled the lead less than ten minutes later and Ali El Khattabi capped an impressive performance by tucking away the third with ten minutes to go.

Breda thriller
NAC Breda edged out SC Heerenveen 4-3 in a thriller, Henk Vos collecting his second goal of the game from the penalty spot in the 83rd minute to snatch all three points. FC Twente, meanwhile, dispatched FC Zwolle 2-0 thanks to second-half goals from Blaise N'Kufo and Georgi Gakhokidze.

Out of rut
In the weekend's other encounters, FC Groningen ended a run of three consecutive home defeats after a 2-0 win against NEC Nijmegen, with Arvid Smit and Chris de Witte on target. ADO Den Haag stayed second from bottom after suffering their 12th defeat of the season following a 1-0 loss at Willem II, who move up to sixth courtesy of Anour Hadouir’s 50th-minute effort. On Friday, RKC Waalwijk brushed aside RBC Roosendaal 3-1 away from home.
