Premiership team Birmingham had been looking to earn a quarter-final fixture at home to Sheffield United FC after drawing 1-1 at Sunderland eleven days ago. But they found their opponents a tough proposition and the first 90 minutes were goalless with the visitors having impressed.
Smith winner
Penalties loomed, but nine minutes into extra time Kevin Kyle's effort was parried by Maik Taylor and second-half substitute Smith was on hand to put the ball in the net.
