FC Basel 1893 suffered their first league defeat of the season last night as they lost 1-0 at Lucien Favre's resurgent FC Zürich.
Decisive goal
Swiss Under-21 international Daniel Gygax scored the decisive goal after just seven minutes and, try as they might, the Swiss Football League leaders failed to find an equaliser. It was their first loss in the league for 29 matches, stretching back to April last year.
Startling revival
Since the Swiss season resumed five weeks ago Basel have won just two of their six games, although they are still 12 points clear of second-placed BSC Young Boys.
European hunt
As for Zürich their revival since the winter break has been startling. After propping up the table at Christmas, they have taken 16 points from a possible 18 and have risen to fifth place in the table.
