Article body
VfB Stuttgart kept alive their hopes of returning to the UEFA Champions League next season with a 2-0 Bundesliga victory against struggling TSV 1860 München on Sunday.
Gap closed
Stuttgart, in their first outing since losing to Chelsea FC in the Champions League's first knockout round, had won just one of their previous six home games before the visit of TSV. But they closed the gap on second-placed FC Bayern München to three points with the win, secured by goals from Zvonimir Soldo and striker Marco Streller.
Fernando off
TSV, who had defender Fernando sent off after a second bookable offence 15 minutes from time, slipped to 14th position in the standings, two places above the drop zone.
Asanin blunder
In the day's other game, fourth-placed VfL Bochum 1848 continued their fine campaign with their eleventh league win of the season, a scrappy 1-0 success against VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach. An 88th-minute own goal from Sladan Asanin was all that split the sides at the Ruhrstadion, leaving the visitors struggling in 15th postion.
