Meyer confirms retirement plan

Coach Hans Meyer has rejected the offer of a new contract and will instead leave Hertha BSC Berlin this summer.

Hertha BSC Berlin have announced that coach Hans Meyer will not be extending his contract and will instead retire from football at the end of the season.

Stevens replacement
Meyer joined Hertha during the winter break on a short-term contract until the summer, after the Bundesliga strugglers dismissed Huub Stevens. Despite the fact that the team have also struggled under Meyer and are currently third from bottom of the table, Hertha had hoped he would stay on for another year.

Club accept decision
However, club president Dieter Hoeness has announced that Meyer, 61, is to stick to his original plan and retire in May. "We all wanted him to stay on, but he wants to spend more time with his family and we respect his decision," he said.

Search for successor
Hertha have already begun their search for a replacement and Hoeness said: "We have got our eyes on two to three candidates, who would fit the bill nicely."
