The forward struck two goals in a 3-2 victory for the East Germans against Romania in Bucharest in 1955, and in total scored ten times in 15 internationals. Tröger averaged almost a goal every other game at club level, 105 in 224 appearances for Wismut Aue and SC Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt.
Legendary match
Tröger will also be remembered for playing in the legendary match between Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt from the East and 1. FC Kaiserslautern from the West. Kaiserslautern ran out 5-3 winners in front of over 100,000 spectators at the Zentralstadion in Leipzig on 6 October 1956.
