Trio celebrate as Barça surge

Members

Arsenal FC, FC Porto and RSC Anderlecht won their league titles while FC Barcelona defeated Real Madrid CF.

Celebrating silverware
They were not the only club celebrating silverware over the weekend as FC Porto won the SuperLiga title in Portugal and RSC Anderlecht were crowned champions of Belgium.

Point required
Only a point was required by Arsenal following Chelsea FC's 2-1 defeat at Newcastle United FC earlier in the day and they coasted into a two-goal lead through Patrick Vieira and Robert Pires. Tottenham fought back to equalise through Robbie Keane's injury-time penalty but Arsenal had done enough.

Unbeaten
Arsène Wenger's side remain unbeaten after 34 matches, and could become the first English top-flight team in 115 years to last the season without defeat. Newcastle's victory over Chelsea - secured by an Alan Shearer wonder goal - lifted them level on points with fourth-placed Liverpool FC, who won 1-0 at Manchester United FC on Saturday.

Porto celebrate
Porto's 20th Portuguese title was handed them on Saturday night by Sporting Club de Portugal's 1-0 defeat at UD Leiria. José Mourinho's men were able to celebrate in front of their own supporters yesterday as they beat FC Alverca 1-0, José Bosingwa scoring.

Ajax still waiting
In Belgium, Anderlecht's 27th championship was confirmed on Friday night after defending champions Club Brugge KV could only draw at R. Excelsior Mouscron. However, AFC Ajax are finding it less easy to wrap up the title in the Netherlands. Their goalless draw at NEC Nijmegen meant PSV Eindhoven closed the gap at the top to six points with three matches remaining, after beating RBC Roosendaal 3-0.

Barcelona win
In Spain, FC Barcelona gave themselves hope of catching the leaders by winning 2-1 at second-placed Real Madrid CF. It was the Blaugrana's first victory at the Santiago Bernabéu since 1997 and carries them to within five points of Valencia CF with four games to go.

Xavi winner
Barça, unbeaten in 16 outings, won through a late Xavi Hernández goal after substitute Patrick Kluivert had cancelled out Santiago Solari's opener. Xavi's strike followed Luís Figo's sending-off against his former club. Leaders Valencia CF drew 1-1 at fifth-placed Athletic Club Bilbao, while RC Deportivo La Coruña drew by the same score at Málaga CF and remain fourth.

Bayern close gap
FC Bayern München, meanwhile, are closing the gap at the top in Germany, yesterday's 1-0 derby win against TSV 1860 München cutting SV Werder Bremen's lead to six points with four matches remaining.

Bremen held
Roque Santa Cruz scored Bayern's winner as Bremen were held 0-0 at VfL Bochum 1848. Bremen have won just once in five games and still have to visit Bayern. Stuttgart are two points behind the Bavarians in third place after Silvio Meissner's goal earned them a 1-0 victory at Hannover 96.

PSG go second
Paris Saint-Germain FC climbed second in France's Ligue 1 after a 2-1 home success against Olympique de Marseille, Pedro Pauleta scoring twice. PSG moved above AS Monaco FC, who lost 1-0 at home against FC Nantes Atlantique, Marama Vahirua the goalscorer. Lyon remain three points clear in pole position after beating Stade Rennais FC 3-0.

Totti scores twice
AS Roma retain a slim hope of winning Serie A after they beat Empoli FC 3-0 to close the gap on leaders AC Milan to six points with three games to play. Francesco Totti scored twice in a fixture played in Palermo because of Roma's two-match ban from their home stadium. Milan, who face Roma in a potentially decisive game at the San Siro next weekend, were held 0-0 at Udinese Calcio while third-placed Juventus FC lost 4-3 at home to US Lecce.

Inter stay fourth
Fourth-placed FC Internazionale stay a point clear of S.S. Lazio and AC Parma following their goalless draw at home to Lazio and Parma's 1-1 draw with Reggina Calcio.
