Signori set to retire

News round-up: Giuseppe Signori will finish his Serie A playing career at the end of the season.

'Too much pressure'
The former Italian international striker delivered the news of his pending retirement after Bologna's 3-1 win against AC Siena on Sunday. "The next home game will be my last at the Dall'Ara stadium. The mental and physical pressures of a season at the highest level are too much to continue," he said. "I will quit football or maybe consider playing another season abroad in a league with less stress." Signori, 36, is in his sixth campaign with Bologna, having previously played for UC Sampdoria, Foggia Calcio and S.S. Lazio.

Phoenix rises in Brussels
Less than two years after they were formed, FC Brussels have won promotion to Belgium's top flight. The club, founded by building entrepreneur Johan Vermeersch after RWD Molenbeek went bankrupt in the summer of 2002 and using the license of lower-tier club Strombeek, won the second division title with a 4-0 home win against FC Denderleeuw at the weekend. "We have performed a miracle here," Vermeersch said. "Don't forget that 18 months ago there was nothing here."

Eintracht addition
Veteran striker Arie van Lent will leave VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach at the end of the season to join another Bundesliga side, Eintracht Frankfurt. The 33-year-old will sign a two-year deal with Eintracht and move to the Waldstadion on a free transfer. Van Lent is Mönchengladbach's leading scorer with eight goals from 30 games. However, he said of the switch to another team struggling at the wrong end of the Bundesliga: "I have had five wonderful years with Borussia but it was time for a new challenge."

Mönchengladbach injury blow
Meanwhile, Mönchengladbach must do without South African defender Bradley Carnell for the next three weeks. Carnell sustained a thigh injury during Saturday's 2-0 home defeat by VfL Wolfsburg, which left the club two points off the relegation places. The 27-year-old has made 17 league appearances this season, scoring once.

Southampton signing
English Premiership side Southampton FC have signed Trinidadian international midfield player Kenwyne Jones. The 19-year-old will complete the formalities of the move when the summer transfer window opens - subject to the granting of a work permit.

Danish recruit
Finally, Icelandic club FH Hafnarfjördur have recruited Danish midfield player Simon Karkov on a one-year contract. The 27-year-old was released by Danish Superleague outfit Herfølge BK and joins compatriots Tommy Nielsen and Allan Borgvardt at FH. "Karkov is a good player and hopefully he will fit into the team," coach Ólafur Jóhannesson said.
