Relegation avoided
The 67-year-old was appointed just four days before the start of the season after Francesco Guidolin left the club by mutual consent. However, he has managed to keep Bologna in Italy's top flight despite the departures of key players Julio Cruz, Marcello Castellini and Giulio Falcone.
Decision to continue
Mazzone said: "I would not have agreed to coach another team. I just had to decide between continuing my work at Bologna or retiring. I have been promising my wife that I would retire for the last four or five seasons, but I still love football and want to keep on coaching."
Third spell
The veteran is in his third spell at the Dall'Ara stadium having led the Rossoblù in 1985/86 and 1998/99, when he took them to a UEFA Cup semi-final. He has also coached Ascoli Calcio, AC Fiorentina, US Catanzaro, US Lecce, Pescara Calcio, Cagliari Calcio, AS Roma, SSC Napoli, AC Perugia and Brescia Calcio.
