Four points behind
Stuttgart, fighting with FC Bayern München for second place and direct access to the UEFA Champions League, remained in third with three matches left, four points behind the reigning champions. Brazilian striker Cacau put Stuttgart ahead on 31 minutes but defender Martin Meichelbeck equalised in the 58th for Bochum, who themselves drop a place to sixth.
Outside chance
FC Schalke 04, who stand an outside chance of making the UEFA Cup, held on to seventh place by beating nine-man Hertha BSC Berlin 3-0 in the other game played on Sunday. Hertha, who collapsed after having defenders Marko Rehmer and Malik Fathi sent off in the second half, are now fourth from bottom.
Böhme penalty
Schalke led at the break through a strike by Turkish midfield player Hamit Altintop. They then moved further ahead with a penalty from midfield player Jörg Böhme - after Fathi was sent off for handling the ball - and a goal by Denmark striker Ebbe Sand.
