Perfect start
Shevchenko headed his 22nd league goal of the season from a Kaká cross to give the Rossoneri the perfect start in front of 76,647 at the San Siro. Milan could have gone in 2-0 up at the break as just three minutes before the interval Kaká fed the Ukraine striker again but this time he shot wide.
Interruptions
The match was marred by the throwing of fireworks and missiles from the away end which caused two interruptions in the second half. A firework exploded near Milan's Gennaro Gattuso after Roma had a penalty appeal rejected after Shevchenko had appeared to block a Francesco Totti free-kick with his hand. Milan goalkeeper Dida later received medical attention after being struck by an object thrown from the crowd.
'Scudetto is always special'
It was the first title for coach Carlo Ancelotti, while veteran defenders Paolo Maldini and Alessandro Costacurta set a club record with their seventh championship successes. "The Scudetto is always special, whether it's your first or your last," the 35-year-old Maldini said.
Ravanelli winner
Milan have 79 points from 32 matches and Roma 70. Juventus FC, who are third with 63 points, were beaten 1-0 by an AC Perugia side scrapping to avoid relegation. Fabrizio Ravanelli's goal against the club with whom he won the 1996 UEFA Champions League brought Perugia only their fourth win of the season but they remain five points behind 14th-placed Reggina Calcio. Juventus lost Ciro Ferrara to a red card in the closing stages.
Parma go fourth
First-half goals from Alberto Gilardino, Benito Carbone and Mark Bresciano brought Parma AC a 3-1 victory over Ancona Calcio which lifted them into fourth place on 55 points. Parma have 55 points, two more than FC Internazionale and S.S. Lazio.
Inter lose
Inter went down 2-1 at US Lecce after second-half strikes from Max Tonetto and Cesare Bovo turned around a match which the Nerazzurri had led at the break, through Adriano's 35th-minute penalty. Lazio, meanwhile, were held 1-1 by Reggina, Francesco Cozza's penalty cancelling out Claudio López's opener.
Four red cards
AC Chievo Verona defeated Modena FC 2-0 while struggling Empoli FC gained three valuable points by beating Bologna FC by the same score. Udinese Calcio were 3-1 winners at Sampdoria UC while Brescia Calcio beat hosts Siena Calcio 1-0 in a match marred by four red cards. Brescia's scorer Matteo Brighi was one of the men dismissed, together with team-mate Matuzalem and Siena's Juarez and Roberto D'Aversa.
