Neftchi complete perfect week

Members

Baku side FK Neftchi clinched their fifth Azerbaijani Cup with an extra-time winner against FK Shamkir.

Staunch defending
Neftchi from Baku had pipped Shamkir to the league title on Wednesday in the final round of games, and started brightly in the capital's Republican stadium against a side they were unable to beat in either league encounter, losing 3-1 and drawing 2-2. Only staunch defending from Shamkir kept the champions out in the first half, but after the break the league runners-up rallied and even had the ball in the net only for Viktor Kulikov's effort to be ruled out for a foul.

Deadlock broken
The deadlock was finally broken 14 minutes into extra time when Rashad Sadygov's 25-metre free-kick was only parried by Shamkir goalkeeper Rauf Mehtiev and Samir Abbasov put the rebound into the net for a strike that clinched Neftchi's record fifth Azerbaijani Cup triumph to add to their fourth league title.
