Gil dies at 71

Jesús Gil y Gil, the former president of Club Atlético de Madrid, has died at the age of 71.

Fatal stroke
Gil, 71, suffered a stroke on Sunday and was admitted to hospital in the Spanish city of Talavera de la Reina before being transferred to a Madrid clinic where his condition deteriorated.

Long presidency
He is survived by wife Maria de los Angeles Marín Cobo and son Miguel Ángel Gil Marín. Gil became Atlético president in 1987 and during his 16-year tenure, the Rojiblancos won one Spanish championship and three Spanish Cups. His presidency ended last season when he was replaced by film producer Enrique Cerezo.
