Article body
Olympique Lyonnais can clinch a hat-trick of Ligue 1 titles with a win against third-placed Paris Saint-Germain FC at the Parc des Princes on Saturday evening.
Four points ahead
They would become only the third French club to achieve this feat following the great AS Saint-Etienne team of the late 1960s and 1970s - who managed it twice - and Olympique de Marseille, champions from 1989/90 to 1991/92. Lyon are currently four points ahead of second-placed AS Monaco FC, who face Stade Rennais FC, and six clear of PSG.
'Finish the story'
"We're in Paris to finish the story," Lyon coach Paul Le Guen said. "I was part of the France team who needed to take a single point from two home games to qualify for the [FIFA] World Cup in 1994 and then lost to Israel and Bulgaria. I don't want any surprises." At the other end, eight clubs could still be relegated.
Fight for fourth
In Italy, attention is on the fight for fourth place, the final UEFA Champions League spot. FC Internazionale, who play Empoli FC, currently hold the position, one point ahead of AC Parma and three ahead of S.S. Lazio. The Gialloblù are at home to Udinese Calcio, while Lazio host Modena FC, who are one of three clubs fighting to avoid the two remaining automatic relegation places. They are on 30 points with Empoli. AC Perugia are one behind but, on paper, have the easiest task against relegated Ancona Calcio.
Fond farewells
Serie A will also bid farewell to three old faces on Sunday: coach Marcello Lippi is leaving Juventus FC after their match against AC Siena, Beppe Signori bows out for Bologna FC against US Lecce, while Roberto Baggio will play his final game at the San Siro when Brescia Calcio visit champions AC Milan.
Rivals clash
In Spain, champions Valencia CF visit Villarreal CF, the team they beat to reach next Wednesday's UEFA Cup final, and it is also derby day in Galicia as RC Deportivo La Coruña meet RC Celta de Vigo. There are only bragging rights at stake for fourth-placed Deportivo, but a win is vital for relegation-threatened Celta. FC Barcelona play Real Racing Club Santander, another team with relegation worries, in a match that will see Luis Enrique make his 400th league appearance - and probably his last at the Camp Nou before retiring.
Leverkusen face champions
In Germany, SV Werder Bremen will be presented with the Bundesliga trophy after their match against a Bayer 04 Leverkusen side who will be eager to capitalise on any lack of concentration from the new champions. Leverkusen are currently fourth, two points behind VfB Stuttgart who occupy the final Champions League place and are themselves trying to catch second-placed FC Bayern München. At the bottom, TSV 1860 München play Hertha BSC Berlin at the Olympiastadion in a relegation showdown that the home side must win.
UEFA Cup berth
In England, the one remaining issue is the fight for fifth place - and a UEFA Cup berth - between Aston Villa FC and Newcastle United FC. Villa, a point above Newcastle, play Manchester United FC at home and need only equal Newcastle's result against Liverpool FC at Anfield to secure their place.
Cup final
Finally, FC Porto are seeking a second successive double in Portugal when they face SL Benfica in the Portuguese Cup final at Lisbon's National Stadium. Porto - without César Peixoto, who was in a car crash yesterday - have won four of the last five cups while Benfica have not won a trophy since 1996.
