Azzopardi continues Birkirkara reign

Maltese Premier League runners-up Birkirkara FC have handed a new one-year contract to coach Stephen Azzopardi.

UEFA Cup return
Birkirkara finished four points behind champions Sliema Wanderers FC, who this week eliminated Azzopardi's side from the Maltese Trophy at the semi-final stage. But having secured a UEFA Cup place - the club's eighth consecutive European qualification - Azzopardi has received the green light to continue his reign, which began in December 2001 and has brought every domestic honour other than the league title.

Immediate targets
Azzopardi told uefa.com: "Despite losing out on our main objectives this season, I feel satisfied that I have been kept on by a big club like Birkirkara. My immediate targets for next season will be the continuation of my three-year-plan, a target backed by the Birkirkara board, and to reach the UEFA Cup first round."

Championship dream
He added: "I would like to thank everyone at Birkirkara for their faith in my ongoing work at the club. My great ambition is to win the Premier League title."
