Primera División newcomers UD Levante have named Bernd Schuster as their new coach after they decided to not renew existing coach Manuel Preciado's contract.
One-year deal
Preciado's current deal expires on 30 June and thereafter coaching duties will be handled by the 44-year-old former German international Schuster, who has been offered a one-year deal with the option of an extra term.
Spanish return
A former player with FC Barcelona, Real Madrid CF and Club Atlético de Madrid among others, Schuster developed his managerial skills in his German homeland at SC Fortuna Köln and FC Köln. He returned to Spain to join Xerez CD in 2001 and spent two seasons with the southern Spanish club. More recently he was in charge at Ukrainian club, FC Shakhtar Donetsk.
Long absence
Levante finished the season as Segunda División champions, sealing a return to the top flight after a 41-year absence.
