Bert van Marwijk has been appointed BV Borussia Dortmund coach, replacing Matthias Sammer, who left the club on Sunday and was yesterday named coach of VfB Stuttgart.
Two-year contract
The 1997 European champions said the 52-year-old Dutchman, formerly with Feyenoord, had signed a two-year contract. "When talking to Bert van Marwijk we soon realised that we had a similar opinion on how football should be played and then we decided that we should give it a try," said Dortmund president Dr Gerd Niebaum.
'Extremely proud'
Van Marwijk himself added: "I am extremely proud to be joining Borussia Dortmund. During the season the stadium is sold out with 83,000 fans almost every home game. I hope that I can help the club improve on the result of last season."
Sammer departure
Dortmund parted company with Sammer after missing out on a UEFA Cup spot by finishing sixth. Ironcially, Van Marwijk led Feyenoord to a 3-2 victory against Dortmund in the 2001/02 UEFA Cup final.
