Manzano made for Málaga

Málaga CF have appointed former Club Atlético de Madrid trainer Gregorio Manzano as their new coach.

Málaga CF have agreed terms with former Club Atlético de Madrid coach Gregorio Manzano, who will formally be unveiled as the club's new trainer on Monday.

Narrow failure
Málaga chairman Serafín Roldán confirmed that a two-year contract had been agreed with Manzano to replace Juande Ramos, who left the club last month after taking them to tenth place in the Primera División. The 47-year-old spent last season at Atlético, but left the club by mutual consent after they finished seventh and failed to secure a UEFA Cup place. Atlético have already replaced Manzano with the former Albacete Balompié coach César Ferrando.

Managerial experience
Prior to Atlético, Manzano had spells at RCD Mallorca, Rayo Vallecano, Real Racing Club de Santander and Real Valladolid CF. In 1991, as a 34-year-old, he guided minnows Real Jaén CF to the Segunda División B, and he led Mallorca to the Copa del Rey in 2003.
