UEFA President Lennart Johansson has called upon the public to support the rising stars of tomorrow who are in action at the UEFA European Under-19 Championship final round, which starts on Tuesday in Switzerland.
Attractive tournament
In his message to mark the beginning of the tournament, which runs until 24 July, Mr Johansson said he hoped that Switzerland's geographical position and the calibre of the teams taking part - many of whom will feature players who have already tasted senior top-division action - would prove an attractive proposition for football enthusiasts.
Jubilee celebrations
"This tournament is of particular significance for UEFA because it is taking place in the country where the organisation was founded and established its headquarters," Mr Johansson said. "What is more, UEFA is celebrating its Golden Jubilee this year, 50 years of service to European football."
Nyon final
The final will take place in UEFA's hometown of Nyon. "The opportunity to stage the final of this competition just across the road from the House of European Football in Nyon, at the Colovray stadium, on 24 July was therefore too great to miss," the UEFA President said. "Alongside this event, UEFA is organising a special youth football seminar at its headquarters to which the Under-19 coaches of all its member associations are being invited."
'Heart of Europe'
Mr Johansson added: "In view of Switzerland's location in the heart of Europe, as well as with two neighbouring countries, Italy and Germany, taking part in the final round, we can certainly look forward to packed stadiums throughout the tournament. The skills of the talented young players in action are certainly worth the effort and encouragement."
'Extra spice'
The UEFA President concluded his message by emphasising the prize up for grabs at the final round. "As happens every other year, the first three teams from each group will qualify for the next FIFA World Youth Championship, which will take place in the Netherlands next year, thereby adding extra spice to the competition," he said.
