Sand sidelined by meningitis

FC Schalke 04 striker Ebbe Sand is out for two weeks after being diagnosed with viral meningitis.

Schalke advantage
Schalke lead 3-1 from the first leg, but the 32-year-old former Danish international will miss the chance to play against his countrymen at the Arena AufSchalke. Sand is expected to be out of action for around two weeks and will therefore be unavailable for Schalke's Bundesliga opener against SV Werder Bremen on Friday evening.

Heynckes thoughts
"Losing Ebbe is always a blow because he is one of the leaders in the team," said coach Jupp Heynckes. "But both Gerald Asamoah and Mike Hanke have done well in recent weeks. One of them will replace Ebbe up front. I might even include both of them because they are in good form."
