Former Middlesbrough FC striker Noel Whelan has signed a one-year contract with Scottish Premier League side Aberdeen FC following a successful trial. Belgian First Division newcomers FC Brussels have been hit by an injury to midfield player Davy Theunis just days before the start of the new season. The 24-year-old, currently on a one-year loan from KAA Gent, underwent surgery on an achilles tendon problem on Wednesday and is expected to be out for at least three months.

Switzerland's Grasshopper-Club will be without first-choice goalkeeper for the next six weeks after 22-year-old Peter Jehle broke a bone in his arm in training. The Liechtenstein international only took over as the club's No1 earlier this summer following the release of Fabrice Borer, and is likely to be replaced by 19-year-old Eldin Jakupovic who recently signed professional terms until 2007.

Portsmouth FC have captured goalkeeper Andrea Guatelli on a free transfer from Serie A outfit Parma FC. The 20-year-old Italian has signed a two-year deal with the Premiership club after impressing manager Harry Redknapp in pre-season.

Dutch side Willem II have signed attacker Iwan Redan on a four-year contract from RKC Waalwijk. The 23-year-old, who had a loan spell at Roda JC last season and scored 13 times in total in 2003/04, counts RBC Roosendaal and SBV Vitesse among his former clubs and will hope to replace forwards James Quinn and Erik de Kruijk, sidelined with ankle and knee injuries respectively, at his new side.
