Newly promoted St Etienne have also recruited the Valencia CF defender Javier Garrido on a two-season loan. The 25-year-old, who moved to the Mestalla in 2000 and is under contract at Valencia until 2006, made 15 appearances last term. Meanwhile, Valencia youngster Raúl Albiol has been discharged from hospital after being injured in a car accident last week.
Elsewhere in France, FC Sochaux-Montbéliard have loaned defender Maxence Flachez to second division EA Guingamp for two years. The 32-year-old former Sochaux captain moves on after eight seasons with the Ligue 1 club.
German side 1. FC Nürnberg have agreed a new contract with Slovakian international striker Robert Vittek, securing the 22-year-old's services until 2009. The former ŠK Slovan Bratislava player scored nine goals in Nürnberg's promotion campaign last season. "I am in the Bundesliga and enjoying it," he said.
Beitar Jerusalem FC's Israeli international midfielder Avi Nimni has been banned for three matches and fined €6,000 for profiting from his own transfer from Maccabi Haifa FC. Nimni joined Beitar last November with the Jerusalem club paying the €1.3m fee to a Gibraltar-based company for the 32-year-old's registration. It subsequently transpired that the company belonged to Nimni himself, forcing the Israel Football Association to sanction the player in accordance with FIFA regulations.
Italy's UC Sampdoria have signed striker Fausto Rossini on loan from Atalanta BC. The 26-year-old played last term at Bologna FC but appeared only 13 times after suffering a serious knee injury. In Spain, meanwhile, RCD Espanyol have parted company with Turkish midfielder Tayfun Korkut. The 30-year-old former Real Sociedad de Fútbol player has been released despite having a year left on his contract and becomes a free agent.
FC Groningen have handed a one-year professional contract to 18-year-old attacker Mark Veldmate. The teenager scored nine goals in pre-season for the Dutch Eredivisie club after finishing last season as the reserve team's leading marksman.
