Metalurh move for Popov

Experienced defender Serhiy Popov has joined FC Metalurh Zaporizhya from FC Shakhtar Donetsk.

Shakhtar shutout
The versatile 33-year-old made the move to join former Shakhtar coach Valeriy Yaremchenko at Metalurh with just a few hours remaining before the transfer window closed. Popov has been out of contention at Shakhtar since the arrival of Romanian coach Mircea Lucescu, despite having scored 40 goals in 238 games in Ukraine and having made 36 appearances in European club competition.

Ukrainian honours
Popov's career started in 1988 in Shakhtar's second team. He also played for FC Novator Mariupol, FC SKA Kyiv, FC Niva Vinnitsa and FC Zenit St. Peterburg. As well as winning four Ukrainian Cups and one Ukrainian title with Shakhtar, Popov has scored five times in 54 appearances for Ukraine.
