Charlton Athletic FC sneaked above Manchester United FC into the top half of the English Premiership after they were held 0-0 by visitors Southampton FC in the Monday night match.
Tight half
It was a tight first half at the Valley, with Charlton's Danish winger Dennis Rommendahl the major threat with his pace, shooting at Antti Niemi, who had also saved an effort from Francis Jeffers. At the other end James Beattie only just failed to make contact when Southampton debutant Andreas Jakobsson headed across goal.
Southampton chances
Southampton went close twice times after the hour mark. First Rory Delap right-footed shot forced Dean Kiely into a super one-handed save. Then Kevin Phillips rounded Delap and forced a corner, which was headed only just wide by Claus Lundekvam. Charlton are up to tenth, eight points behind leaders Arsenal FC, while Southampton climbed one place to 15th.
