Slick Utrecht foil Feyenoord

FC Utrecht shocked Feyenoord 3-0, as PSV Eindhoven and AFC Ajax climbed above them in the Eredivisie.

Feyenoord dropped to third place in the Dutch Eredivisie after succumbing to their first defeat of the season at home to FC Utrecht.

Schut opener
Ruud Gullit's side entered the weekend at the top of the table, but never looked comfortable against a side on a high following their impressive 4-0 defeat of Swedish club Djurgårdens IF in the UEFA Cup on Thursday. Central defender Alje Schut headed in a corner to open the scoring after the half-hour and Utrecht doubled their lead through Hans Somers with two minutes of the game remaining. Joost Broerse made it 3-0 in injury time.

Van Bommel penalty
Feyenoord's replacements at the top of the league, PSV Eindhoven, also scored two late goals as they beat NEC Nijmegen. Captain Marc van Bommel broke the deadlock from the penalty spot just before the half-hour after José Valencia's clumsy challenge on Ji-Sung Park. Michael Lamey made it 2-0 on 72 minutes before Swiss youngster Johan Vonlanthen completed the scoring in the dying moments.

Ajax win
Champions AFC Ajax moved up a place to second, with a comprehensive 5-0 win at FC Den Bosch on Sunday. Wesley Sneijder, Zdenek Grygera and Nigel de Jong all found the net, while captain Rafael van der Vaart scored twice on his return to the stadium where he made his Ajax debut in April 2000.

Vitesse vim
The result means that Feyenoord now lie third alongside Utrecht and this season's surprise package, SBV Vitesse. Edward Sturing's side were almost relegated last term, but the 4-0 defeat of ADO Den Haag on Friday was their third win of the season - only one less than they managed in the whole of the last campaign. Theo Janssens scored twice for the visitors.

Huntelaar double
Klaas-Jan Huntelaar also scored twice as SC Heerenveen won 3-0 against NAC Breda, while RKC Waalwijk beat RBC Roosendaal 2-0 at home with goals from Robert Fuchs and Rick Hoogendorp. The games between Roda JC and AZ Alkmaar, and FC Twente and Willem II both ended in draws.

Stalemate
At the bottom of the table, FC Groningen fought back to draw 2-2 at De Graafschap. Trailing 2-0 at the break, Groningen earned a point thanks to a Michael van der Kruis own goal and Brian Pinas's equaliser 15 minutes from time.
