Article body
Hislop beaten
The Australian international marked his return from suspension with a goal ten minutes from time, heading beyond Portsmouth goalkeeper Shaka Hislop to inflict the south coast club's second successive defeat.
Bent denied
Portsmouth's Nigel Quashie had hit the woodwork in the opening stages but the visitors dominated from that point onwards. Steve Watson went close and Marcus Bent squandered three chances to break the deadlock before Cahill, who served a ban for his exuberant celebration after scoring the winner against Manchester City FC two weeks ago, pounced to secure the points.
Portsmouth slip
Everton remain in third position, three points behind Arsenal, their only conquerors so far this season. Harry Redknapp's Portsmouth, who travel to winless Norwich City FC next weekend, slip one place to 14th.
