Freewheeling Wisla win again

Monthly review: Wisla Kraków are cruising through the new Polish season, winning six of seven games.

By Maciej Iwanski

Wisla Kraków are cruising through the new Polish season. In seven games so far, the defending Ekstraklasa champions have won six and drawn one, registering 29 goals including last Saturday's 7-1 triumph at Zaglebie Lubin and a 5-0 thrashing of MKS Pogon Szczecin. Remarkably, Wisla striker Tomasz Frankowski has scored 12 times already.

Groclin stall
Groclin Grodzisk Wielkopolski had been keeping pace in second place, winning their first five matches, but a 2-0 defeat by KS Cracovia has left them four points behind albeit with a game in hand. Winger Marcin Bojarski scored twice for newly promoted Cracovia to continue the impressive start made by Wojciech Stawowy's side. Before overcoming Groclin, sixth-placed Cracovia had also accounted for Zaglebie and Lech Poznan.

Crisis club
The latter club are in crisis. Polish Cup winners last term, injury-hit Lech have lost five games already. Coach Czeslaw Michniewicz says the national team's summer tour of the United States disrupted his pre-season, with seven Lech players involved.

Early honours
One player catching the eye is KSP Polonia Warszawa midfielder Konrad Golos, a summer signing from second division Radomiak Radom. Meanwhile, coaching honours go to the veteran Werner Licka, under whose tutelage Górnik Zabrze remain unbeaten and in fifth position.

Style question
In third and fourth places are the country's UEFA Cup entrants, Legia Warszawa and KS Amica Wronki, who continue to collect points if not necessarily plaudits. Legia coach Dariusz Kubicki is under pressure from his chairman and club owners, media company ITI, on account of the side's playing style. Amica at least managed to halt the Wisla juggernaut by claiming a 1-1 draw in Krakow two weekends ago.
