The new team, who are owned by Aurelio De Laurentis, son of the famous Italian film producer Dino, have been allowed to take part in Serie C1. SSC Napoli, twice national champions and UEFA Cup winners during their 1980s heyday, were relegated for financial reasons from Serie B this summer and then declared bankrupt.
Famous home
The new Napoli have been given until 23 September to sign players and will take up residence at their predecessor's San Paolo stadium in Naples. They are likely to appoint the experienced Giovanni Vavassori as coach.
Glory days
Inspired by the great Argentinian Diego Maradona, Napoli won the Serie A title in 1987 and again in 1990, and also beat German side VfB Stuttgart to lift the UEFA Cup in 1989.
