He succeeds Italian Sergio Brio, who was sacked last week after Mons took just five points from their first eight games of the campaign and dropped to 17th place in the Belgian First Division. Daerden, 49, who made his name as a player with R. Standard de Liège and Dutch side Roda JC, previously coached KSK Beveren, KFC Lommelse, Standard and K. Lierse SK.
Familiar opponents
Daerden's first match in charge will be against KRC Genk, where he worked as assistant coach until last summer and where his son, current Belgian international Koen Daerden, plays. "I will have to take care not to sit on the wrong bench," Daerden Snr joked.
