UEFA Cup exit
Gençlerbirligi's previous coach Erdogan Arica resigned last Friday after the Turkish side were eliminated from the UEFA Cup in the first round, losing 2-1 on aggregate to Greece's Egaleo FC. Çetin, 41, spent the second half of last season with Kayserispor and previously trained Fenerbahçe between December 2002 and April 2003.
'Compatible character'
"We have agreed terms with Çetin, who is compatible with our club's character thanks both to his footballing abilities and to his personality," said Gençlerbirligi spokesman Muammer Akyüz. "I believe under his reign Gençlerbirligi will start to improve and will climb the league table."
Gençlerbirligi spirit
Çetin insisted his priority was to restore the old Gençlerbirligi spirit: "Gençlerbirligi have always had targets and have competed to reach those goals. We will try to rescue the club from their current position in the shortest possible time." The Ankara-based outfit are in 13th place in the Superleague with eight points from eight games.
