Sicilian defences produce stalemate

FC Messina Peloro drew 0-0 with US Città di Palermo in the first Sicilian derby in Serie A for 39 years.

By Paolo Corradini

The first Sicilian derby in Serie A for 39 years ended goalless as FC Messina Peloro were held by visitors US Città di Palermo.

Toni goes close
Messina have adapted better to Serie A than their rivals who were also promoted last season, and the home side largely controlled possession in the first half but did not manage to create a clear-cut chance. Palermo became more aggressive after the break, and Italian international striker Luca Toni hit the post in the 74th minute with an angled effort.

Messina climb
After that scare Messina hit back and Atsushi Yanagisawa's header struck the bar seven minutes from time. But the game finished level, meaning Messina climb to fourth, level with AC Chievo Verona and US Lecce, while Palermo move a point clear of the relegation zone.
