Arsenal stunned by Mellor magic

Neil Mellor's rasping drive defeated Arsenal FC and left Chelsea FC five points clear in England.

Late winner
Mellor scored two minutes into added time after it looked as though Patrick Vieira had claimed a point for Arsène Wenger's side with a well-worked equaliser on 57 minutes. Liverpool had taken the lead four minutes before the interval when Xabi Alonso drilled in a rising right-footed shot from just outside the penalty area.

Faltering Arsenal
Arsenal, who could only draw at home against struggling West Bromwich Albion FC last weekend, have now won only one of their last nine UEFA Champions League and Premiership games. In contrast, Everton FC continued their surprise form this season by grounding out a 1-1 draw at Newcastle United FC, gaining a point which strengthens their position of third in the table.

Carsley cracker
The Merseysiders had to fight back from a goal behind after Craig Bellamy gave the home side an early lead - slotting in after a neat one-two with Patrick Kluivert on five minutes. However, after twice clearing off their own goalline, Everton got the equaliser through a superb Lee Carsley free-kick just short of the hour.

Boro miss chance
Meanwhile, Newcastle's north-east rivals Middlesbrough FC missed the chance to go fourth as they fell to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Martin Jol's Tottenham Hotspur FC, who halted a six-game losing streak to claim their first league win under their new Dutch coach. The home side had their cause helped when UEFA Cup hopefuls Middlesbrough had defender Franck Queudrue sent off five minutes before half-time.

Defoe on mark
Tottenham took advantage of the extra man, going ahead just four minutes after the restart through English international Jermain Defoe. The three points were sealed on 76 minutes when substitute Frédéric Kanouté charged down a Mark Schwarzer kick and the rebound ended up in the back of the net.
