The search is on for a new chief executive of the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) after the resignation of Fran Rooney was announced today.

Question mark
Rooney had been at the helm of the Irish game for 18 months but questions had been asked about his style of management, prompting the formation of an FAI investigation committee. The former manager of the Republic of Ireland women's team agreed to step down from his role on Friday 5 November.

'Always committed'
"I will always be committed to football in Ireland. I thank all those who worked with me in the past 18 months. I am also grateful to the people who expressed their support for me," Rooney said. The new incumbent will be the fourth chief executive in as many years following the departures of Bernard O'Byrne, Brendan Menton and now Rooney.
