Home hammering
Berger has signed a contract until June 2006 and succeeds Juri Schlünz who stood down on Sunday following a 6-0 home defeat by Hamburger SV. Schlünz had been in charge since the resignation of Armin Veh 13 months ago.
Rock bottom
The 60-year-old Berger will need to call upon his considerable experience – this is his 15th job in professional football including spells with FC Schalke 04, 1. FC Köln and Eintracht Frankfurt – to improve a Rostock side who have lost all seven home games this season and lie two points adrift at the foot of the table with just two wins.
Successful pairing
Berger has brought in 53-year-old Frank Engel as assistant coach after the pair's success at TSV Alemannia Aachen where they took the 2. Bundesliga club to last season's German Cup final. Despite a 3-2 loss to Werder Bremen, Aachen qualified for the UEFA Cup by reaching the showpiece.
