Kevin Davies swept in the winner as Bolton Wanderers FC climbed to fourth in the Premiership table with a 2-1 victory at home against Newcastle United FC.
Five-point gap
The former Southampton FC and Blackburn Rovers FC striker slid in to score his third goal of the season 20 minutes from time and move Sam Allardyce's side within five points of leaders Arsenal FC.
Ambrose strike
Davies had missed the first half's only clear-cut chance when he screwed wide but his side took the lead seven minutes after the interval. El-Hadji Diouf, on loan from Liverpool FC, scrambled in the opener to score his first goal for Bolton but Darren Ambrose quickly levelled for the visitors, beating two players before rifling in from 25 metres.
First defeat
However, Davies played a one-two through a crowded penalty area before scoring the winner and inflicting a first defeat for UEFA Cup hopefuls Newcastle since Graeme Souness took over as manager ten games ago. The weekend programme is completed on Monday night when Manchester City FC play winless Norwich City FC at home.
