Wolfsburg waltz to victory

VfL Wolfsburg returned to fourth in the Bundesliga with their largest home victory in six years.

By Manfred Christoph

Martin Petrov was in imperious form as VfL Wolfsburg returned to fourth in the Bundesliga table with a 5-0 victory against lacklustre DSC Arminia Bielfeld - their biggest home win for over six years.

Brdaric double
After Danish international Thomas Rytter had broken the deadlock with his first goal in four seasons at the club, Petrov put in a virtuoso performance as Wolfsburg threatened to run away with the match. The Bulgarian midfield player's corner was headed in by Diego Klimowicz on 26 minutes to double the lead, before two more raking balls into the area were both converted by Germany striker Thomas Brdaric in the space of three minutes with half-time approaching. Petrov sealed an emphatic victory with a 67th-minute penalty.

Lethargic Leverkusen held
After their exertions against FC Dynamo Kyiv in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, Bayer 04 Leverkusen looked decidedly sluggish in their return to domestic action. Dimitar Berbatov broke the deadlock on 58 minutes against the run of play at VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach, but the goal only invigorated the home side. Václav Sverkos equalised from the penalty spot ten minutes later and Dick Advocaat's team had a number of chances to take all three points. But Leverkusen hung on for the draw and remain eighth, seven places above Mönchengladbach.
