Everton FC won the 200th Merseyside derby with Liverpool FC to claim second place in the English Premiership.
Carsley winner
It was a close game at Goodison Park, but Lee Carsley settled it in the 68th minute, scoring from outside the box after being set up by Leon Osman. Everton overtake Arsenal FC, who would return to their previous position on Sunday by defeating leaders Chelsea FC, whose advantage over David Moyes' club is currently three points.
Southampton denied
Harry Redknapp seemed to be heading for a winning start as Southampton FC manager when goals from Kevin Phillips on half-time and Peter Crouch just after the hour gave them a 2-0 lead against Middlesbrough FC. But a Danny Higginbotham own goal two minutes from time and a last-gasp Stuart Downing strike rescued a point for the fifth-placed visitors and kept Southampton in the bottom three.
Five-goal thriller
However, Norwich City FC are out of the relegation zone after a dramatic 3-2 triumph against Bolton Wanderers FC, Mathias Svensson claiming his second goal of the game six minutes from time to seal victory. Newcastle United FC are now five home games without a Premiership win after being held 1-1 by Portsmouth FC, Lee Bowyer's early goal cancelled out on the half-hour by Steve Stone. Newcastle are 12th, behind Tottenham Hotspur FC for who Frédéric Kanoute scored the only goal at Manchester City FC.
Strugglers draw
Matt Holland's goal gave Charlton Athletic FC a 1-0 win at basement club West Bromwich Albion FC, while Blackburn Rovers FC are back into the bottom threre after a 0-0 draw with fellow strugglers Crystal Palace FC.
