Article body
A powerful drive from England centre-half Sol Campbell was enough to defeat Portsmouth FC and lift Arsenal FC back into second place in the Premiership on Sunday.
Ashdown beaten
The defending champions seemed to be on course for a goalless draw at Fratton Park which would have left them a point behind second-placed Everton FC and, perhaps more importantly, seven adrift of leaders Chelsea FC. But with 14 minutes left, Campbell strode forward unchallenged and sent the ball low past Portsmouth goalkeeper Jamie Ashdown from 25 metres for his first goal for almost 16 months .
Liverpool joy
In the day's earlier game, Liverpool FC strengthened their bid for a place in the top four with a 3-1 win against ten-man Newcastle United FC at Anfield. Rafael Benítez's side had fallen behind to a 32nd-minute goal from Patrick Kluivert but took just three minutes to draw level again thanks to Titus Bramble's own goal.
Brilliant Baroš
By the 38-minute mark Liverpool were ahead after Neil Mellor found the net for his fifth goal in five home matches and Milan Baroš made sure of the points on the hour, latching on to Harry Kewell's weighted pass and skipping past Shay Given before tucking the ball inside the near post. Lee Bowyer compounded Newcastle's misery by receiving a second yellow card 13 minutes from time.
Monday match
Charlton Athletic FC and Fulham FC complete the weekend fixtures when they meet at The Valley on Monday night.
