Failed comeback
Vassell fractured his ankle in October and the resulting surgery was followed by a three-month lay-off. However, the 24-year-old broke down on his comeback appearance for Villa's reserves and it was decided he needed a "clean-up operation".
'Different pain thresholds'
Villa manager David O'Leary said: "The surgeon wanted to see if Darius could get on with playing, but people have different pain thresholds and Darius just can't get on with it. We don't expect to see him for a long time."
