Young guns go for it in Latvia

Members

Latvian football has welcomed a new team made up of young players from other top-flight clubs, FC Olimps Riga.

Vacancy filled
The Latvia Football Federation confirmed today that the newly formed FC Olimps Riga would fill the vacant eighth place in the league, replacing first division winners FC Zibens-Zemessardze Ilukste who had refused to step up a division because of financial reasons.

Dreimanis takes charge
The Olimps Riga squad will comprise largely Under-23 players who will be loaned out from other top-flight clubs to gain first-team experience. Former Latvia Under-19 coach Janis Dreimanis will train the side and will bring in several more experienced players to help the youngsters. He said: "Our youngsters need players alongside them who know what football is all about, especially in the first year of playing in the Virsliga."
