Article body
Italy's Pierluigi Collina will referee the FIFA/UEFA Football for Hope match at FC Barcelona's Nou Camp stadium on Tuesday 15 February. The game, which will kick off at 21.00CET, has been organised by the world and European football bodies to raise funds for the relief effort following the tsunami disaster in south and Southeast Asia.
Assistants from the region
FIFA said on Monday that the assistant referees for the match, Mohamed Saeed (Maldives) and Jason Joseph Damoo (Seychelles), have been appointed specifically because they come from two of the nations ravaged by the tsunami, while the fourth official will be Eduardo Iturralde Gonzalez (Spain).
UEFA ambassador
Collina is one of the world's most widely known referees and took charge of the 2002 FIFA World Cup final. Last year, he acted as an ambassador for the joint campaign by UEFA and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to highlight the plight of children in war.
Top players
The game will feature a host of the planet's top players, who will play in two teams - one led by Barcelona's Brazilian playmaker Ronaldinho and the other by AC Milan and Ukraine striker Andriy Shevchenko. Barcelona are providing their stadium and facilities free of charge for the game.
Massive response
FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) have opened a solidarity fund, and UEFA has contributed €1.5m - half of the amount going to the solidarity fund and the other half to the ICRC to assist and support child victims.
