Tickets are now on sale for the special FIFA/UEFA 'Football for Hope' match.
Article body
Tickets are now on sale for the FIFA/UEFA 'Football for Hope' match in Barcelona on 15 February, with all proceeds going towards relief efforts following the recent natural disaster in the Indian Ocean.
Joint venture
The match, which kicks off at 21.00CET, is being organised by the world and European governing bodies with the approval of the Spanish Football Federation, and FC Barcelona have made their Camp Nou stadium and facilities available free of charge.
Illustrious captains
FIFA and UEFA have invited some 50 stars of world football to take part in the match and they will line up in two teams - one led by Barcelona's Brazilian playmaker Ronaldinho, and the other by AC Milan and Ukraine striker Andriy Schevchenko.
All-star lineups
Italy coach Marcello Lippi and Arsenal FC's Arsène Wenger will take charge of Shevchenko's team, which will include Italian defender Paolo Maldini, England captain David Beckham, French pair Thierry Henry and Zinedine Zidane, Spanish forward Raúl González and Czech star Pavel Nedved.
Brazilian influence
Brazilian aces Ronaldo, Cafu, Juninho Pernambucano and Kaká, together with African talents Samuel Eto'o and Obafemi Martins and a host of names from South America and Asia will feature in Ronaldinho's team. In charge of this group will be Brazil's 1994 FIFA World Cup-winning coach Carlos Alberto Parreira and Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard. (For the full list of players see below.)
Football's message
"Football is the biggest show on earth - it matters to people," said UEFA communications and public affairs director William Gaillard. "So the best way to put the message across that the victims of the tsunami need help is for these great players to go out on to the field and play a match in which everyone can show their support."
Solidarity fund
The funds raised from the Football for Hope match will be donated in their entirety to the Tsunami Solidarity Fund set up by FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). Last week, UEFA announced that it was donating €1.5m (US$2m) to the tsunami relief effort - €750,000 (US$1m) to its charity partner, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), to assist and support child victims, and the same amount to the FIFA/AFC Tsunami Solidarity Fund.
