A solitary strike from Alberto Gilardino gave Parma FC a surprise Serie A victory against Udinese Calcio.

By Paolo Corradini

Alberto Gilardino helped Parma FC move three points clear of the Serie A drop zone with the only goal of the game against third-place Udinese Calcio tonight.

Chances squandered
Gilardino scored the decisive goal in the 34th minute but his side were made to sweat for the victory. Udinese came back strongly in the second half but both Mirko Pieri and Vincenzo Iaquinta missed chances to restore parity for the away side. Gilardino could have added a second a minute from time but his close-range shot struck the post.

Tiribocchi winner
Earlier on Saturday, AC Chievo Verona moved to within a point of tenth-placed AS Livorno Calcio after defeating their visitors 1-0 at the Stadio Bentegodi. Simone Tiribocchi's fourth goal of the season in the 31st minute was enough to win the game for Chievo and move them six points clear of the relegation positions.
